Prostate Health Diet
The prostate gland surrounds a portion of the urethra and is part of the male reproductive system. Prostate cancer usually affects men 50 or older, although it can strike earlier.
Men should be concerned with preventing this disease and adopting habits that lead to complete prostate health. Diet plays a big role and can possibly make the difference between developing a disease of the prostate or not developing one. There are some specific dietary changes you can adopt which are thought by many experts to promote a healthier prostate gland.
The first thing to do when evaluating the diet is look at what should be eliminated. Prostate health problems are more prevalent in countries like the U.S. where animal products are consumed in high quantities. This includes dairy, eggs and red meat. It is thought that foods high in saturated and trans fats can also be a culprit of poor prostate health. According to CNN, the incidence of prostate cancer varies a great deal from country to country, with the highest rates being recorded in countries where the most fat is consumed.
Not all fat is bad, in fact it is necessary to have some fat in your diet. However, it should be limited to what are thought of as 'healthy fats' like that from fish and olive oil. Fish such as wild salmon and mackerel containing high levels of omega fatty acids are touted as potentially helpful for prostate health. Eating lots of fruit and vegetables is also associated with a healthy prostate. Studies have linked lycopene, an antioxidant found in tomatoes and watermelon, as a beneficial ally in the fight against prostate cancer and other disorders of this gland.
When developing a diet you may want to consult with a dietician who can put together a personalized plan based on your needs and preferences. Your doctor should also be informed of any changes you're making to your diet and/or exercise routine. Regular exercise in conjunction with a consistently healthy diet can not only keep the prostate functioning in top condition but the rest of the body as well. In review, the foundation of prostate health and disease prevention includes a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables, regular exercise and the avoidance of unhealthy foods, beverages and habits. If you smoke, quit. Alcohol should be consumed in strict moderation or not at all. These basic guidelines may help you stay healthier now and in the future.
