Enlarged Prostate Causes

The problem of BPH or benign prostate hypertrophy is one that affects most every man at some point during his lifetime, with the risk of this condition increasing with age. Also known as an enlarged prostate, this condition is not the same as prostate cancer but may have the same warning symptoms. Enlarged prostate causes are not fully known, only theorized about by doctors and researchers. Therefore the causes linked to BPH are not definitive. However, there are some issues that doctors think may play a role.

Many believe aging is a big risk factor in the development of an enlarged prostate. The testicles are also implemented as being a possible cause because men who have had their testicles removed will not develop enlarged prostate. One reason the testicles may be removed at a young age is testicular cancer. Also, removal of the testicles after enlargement has occurred will cause the prostate to lessen in size. Therefore, the two causes thought to be linked to enlarged prostate are increasing age and normal testicles. These are risk factors most men cannot avoid (nor would they want to) which is why educating yourself on this issue is important.

Now that you know the potential causes for this very common condition, let's discuss the treatment options. Men who experience chronic enlargement of the prostate gland may benefit from anti-inflammatory antibiotics. There are other prescription medications as well which may help shrink the prostate and make urination easier. The reason urination becomes difficult with enlargement of the prostate is because this gland surrounds part of the urethra. Difficulty urinating is a main symptom of this condition and the one that usually sends a man to the doctor for an exam.

Your doctor will not only tell you more about potential enlarged prostate causes but also about the medications and other treatment options available. Saw palmetto is an herb that many experts believe can benefit prostate health. However before you take saw palmetto or any other over the counter supplement, ask your doctor. Certain supplements may interact with your current medications or have an effect on any medical conditions you may have. In certain cases, there may be no medication recommended as sometimes a mild case of enlarged prostate will resolve with simple lifestyle changes or on its own.
