Enlarged Prostate Diagnosis
The prostate is a gland about the size of a walnut located around a portion of the urethra. It is integral to the health of the male reproductive system. When the prostate becomes enlarged, there are often noticeable symptoms. They include painful urination, trickling urination, frequent nighttime urination and the inability to urinate more than a few drops at a time. Because these symptoms are also a sign of prostate cancer, a visit to your doctor is necessary. If you obtain an enlarged prostate diagnosis, you might be wondering what to do next.
An enlarged prostate does not mean you have cancer. It is a benign condition. The medical term for an enlarged prostate is BPH or benign prostatic hypertrophy. Experts theorize that the majority of men will experience this problem at least once in their lifetime if they reach maximum life span. That means if you live to be around 70 to 80 years of age you will probably have experienced enlargement of the prostate. Luckily there are a variety of treatments for this common yet uncomfortable male problem. They include the wait and see method, the prescribing of medicines and even the use of natural remedies.
Sometimes an enlarged prostate will get better on its own. However in some cases it is necessary to take medication. Alpha blockers are medications originally used to treat high blood pressure. The other class of medications are enzyme inhibitors. These medications are very different from one another and your doctor will decide which type is best for you. Alpha blockers relax the muscles responsible for comfortable urination, while enzyme inhibitors work to prevent the production of hormones that cause enlargement. The size of your prostate and your blood pressure are two factors that will be considered before a decision is made regarding medication.
Once you have received an enlarged prostate diagnosis, your doctor will not only tell you exactly what that means but what he or she feels is the best course of action. In some cases natural remedies may be used, such as the herb saw palmetto. In other cases medication will be prescribed, while surgery is only done in severe and chronic cases. Despite the discomfort experienced, an enlarged prostate is usually nothing to worry about because it can be successfully treated.
